On January 26, 2014, I received the Nexplanon implant. This is a small flexible rod, embedded with hormones, that serves as contraception for up to three years. It works systemically and takes a little time for the hormone to make it throughout your body. I did a lot of research on this. I was scared away from the Mirena for numerous reasons (message me and I can enlighten you). The IUD is a great choice for many women, it just was not for me. I am a mother to a 14 month old daughter. I am an RN and am also married.
I was horrible at remembering to take my pills and the fluctuations in hormones led to migraines, monthly. Someone pointed me in the direction of the Nexplanon. The insertion procedure seems intimidating to someone who does not like needles....and I am one of those people! However, the insertion of the device itself was nothing. First they swab the area where it will be inserted with iodine to sanitize. Then they inject Lidocaine in the area of insertion to numb it. This part was the only part that hurt like little bee stings as the medication went underneath the skin. The rod itself is inserted just under the skin. Using an applicator device, the specially trained and certified doctor inserts the Nexplanon. You will likely bruise up to 24 hours after the procedure in that area of insertion. You do get a pressure bandage, just leave it on as instructed and that will help lessen the bruising. The area was tender for about a week. I still have a scab where the applicator needle entered, and the site itched as it healed. Other than that, no complications.
I did have a headache for about two days around February 5th, about 10 days after insertion. Not sure if it is related or not. I know with any switch in birth control and hormones, side effects can occur and disappear just as quickly as they started.
I have uploaded a video to YouTube. I will also provide monthly updates on any side effects, etc that I may experience.
Thanks and I hope this helps you!
